Health Care Assistant (HCA)

Starting salary: $20/hr

Qualifications:

Meet the Competency Requirements as defined by the Government of Alberta’s Health Care Aide Competency Profile and must provide evidence of their competency to EPINSS management as follows:

Certified -Have graduated from a provincially recognized Health Care Aide Program or registered in a provincially recognized Health Care Aide Program within 6 months of hire.

  • Substantially Equivalent – an educational background deemed equivalent by EPINSS nursing management
  • Provide a criminal record check no older than 6 months which must be submitted prior to their commencement date.
  • If possible, have related work experience.
  • Have the ability to communicate effectively in English both verbally and written.
  • Have the ability to organize work tasks in order to work independently and as a team member in a flexible Client focused environment.
  • Must be able to perform repetitive lifting, reaching, squatting, walking, and transferring of clients/equipment as part of their work duties.
  • Have the knowledge and ability to operate related equipment to perform the expected duties of this position.
  • Have confidence in their interpersonal skills in order to interact with a wide variety of Clients, other staff and families or alternate caregivers

Job Description:

Under the supervision of the Director of Care, LPN, RN, Undergraduate Nurse, and/or Team Leader, the Health Care Aide (HCA) works within the defined competencies of their job description. Duties are performed in accordance with established policies and procedures and in a manner which respects the uniqueness, dignity, worth, need for self -respect and, self-determination of the Client all in ways; which promotes maximum personal and functional independence as a result of holistic care.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides holistic personal care to clients ensuring that the Client’s activities of daily living needs are met as per policy and procedures. Examples include but are not limited to, personal hygiene, oral care, skin care, foot care which may include fingernail and toenail clipping (Nail clipping is not applicable to clients with diabetes, any clients with circulatory problems, or who are prescribed anticoagulants), toileting, and bathing.
  • Provides Clients with nutritional assistance including, but not limited to meals, nourishment and tray service, encouraging and assisting Clients to
  • Eat when appropriate, as well as, assisting Clients to and from dining areas in accordance with meal service schedules.
    Assists with providing medications to Clients which have been prescribed by the physician.
  • Reports any appetite and/or fluid intake changes to their supervisor.
  • Observes and reports any changes in a client’s functional and cognitive behavior to appropriate supervisor.
  • Transfers clients in/out of bed, to/from wheelchair and chair using one person or two person assist, or mechanical lift as per Client’s care plan.
  • Assists with admissions, discharges and transfers of Clients.
  • Encourages and assists clients to participate in social, physical, spiritual and recreational activities.
  • Maintains a clean, safe, homelike environment for Clients and staff. Reports unsafe or faulty equipment immediately to the administrator.
  • Ensures care equipment and supplies are used and stored in safe and efficient manners. Designated equipment storage areas must be kept clean and tidy.
  • Ensures clients personal items are marked, handled and stored properly.
  • Processing of soiled personal clothing as per policy and procedures.
  • Removing/changing soiled linen and laundering the Client’s linens according to laundry protocol.
  • Ensures that client rights are maintained.
  • Responds to Clients requests and/or needs promptly and appropriately.
  • Assisting clients to and from scheduled appointments (driven off site or onsite appointments)
  • Housekeeping Duties
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure clients receive holistic quality care.
